Top 5 Emotionally Intelligent Leadership Capacities

  • Emotional self perception

I know that when something makes me upset or mad, that I need to take a step back and take deep breaths. I figure out what causes me to have these emotions and try and either avoid them or go about the situation in a different way. I know that I can affect a group or a team positively or negatively depending on my emotions.

  • Emotional self control

As a paraprofessional and a coach I would not be successful without emotional self control. I have been called names and threatened verbally and physically. I have had to break up fights and arguments. If I did not have self control in these situations I know that I would make the situation much worse. I always try to remain calm and not let a situation overwhelm me. I know that I am in a position where parents, staff, and students trust that I keep a level head to ensure the safety of those involved.

  • Authenticity

I am very honest and open about my intentions. I like to be viewed as honest and with integrity. So If I tell students or athletes something they know that I am being honest. I do this by continuing to reinforce my beliefs and values through actions. I also think it is important to show people, especially students, that you make mistakes. So when I make a mistake I am honest and admit that I was wrong.

  • Developing relationships

As a coach and a paraprofessional, relationships are very important. It is possibly the most important aspect of either job. If I want to be able to teach and help a student improve I need to develop a positive relationship with them. I work toward developing relationships with students and athletes every day. One of the things that I do to develop this is ask the students how they are doing and ask about their self interests. Students like to talk about themselves and it fosters a good relationship when you show that you care about what they are talking about.

  • Achievement

I am always setting new standards or new goals for myself to meet each day. I like to compete with myself and improve on something that I did previously. I try to be perfect with each thing I do. I have a positive attitude about not perfecting something because It gives me more motivation to do better the next time. I believe that I can be successful if I continue to compete within myself and improve each day.
